Gen Z protest on Twitter after UI professor ‘arrested’ lady for carrying skateboard on campus
Something akin to a battle of generations is currently ongoing on Twitter after a video was uploaded on the platform showing the moment a professor ‘arrested’ a young lady for carrying a skateboard on the campus of the University of Ibadan.
The video shows Professor Joseph Woods of the institution holding a young lady by her shirt on what appears to be the pedestrian walkway of the institution.
The car that the Professor came out from to make the arrest can be seen with a door a jar on the institution’s access road.
It was not established in the video or the conversations therein that the lady was using the skateboard when the lecturer apprehended her.
Professor Woods accused the lady of endangering the lives of motorists ostensibly by skateboarding on campus.
The chemistry professor can be heard telling off a couple of men who try to appeal to him to let her go. He tells them that they will find themselves in Sango’s police station if they are neither staff nor students and still remain there when security men arrive.
The young lady is heard in the video explaining that skateboarding is a sport like cycling and that she knows what she is doing.
“Sir, can we have a conversation about this?” the lady asks.
“No! I can’t have a conversation with you. The only conversation I can have is, give me this (the skateboard), and follow me to the security office,” the professor says.
The lady says she cannot give up the skateboard because she saved money to purchase it.
The prof holds on to the lady until the security men arrive and take her with them.
The incident did not go down well with the young generations, especially the Gen Zs and millennials on Twitter. Many of them accuse the older generations of demonising ‘whatever they do not understand’.
@draejohn22: “It is absurd that we operate such a garbage system in this part of the world, especially in a university or college. The oldies just want to shut down anything they don’t understand, without even considering it. Without open minds, how can we innovate?”
Motudun NG writing with the handle @akinmusi, said: “What some do, earn a living from. Some even upload this stuff on SM for content monetization. I have seen 3 year old stunt rider or even above. https://youtu.be/Bl7Ma8zknWk. What’s it with this mental prison called?😔
@JasonJhms: “Some old Nigerians can be so unreasonable.”
@Godfreyeffzy: “Just imagine na the young lady even Dey try reason.. these older generations ehh.”
@_ogiemwenva: “This man Dey talk rubbish”

@chiwinny7: “Omo this our country sef, everything just de anyhow, even the so-called professors, who curse us abeg.”
@Ebizimos: “Na the so-called professors wey we get for the country be this oh.”
Someone else wrote: “Even if skating is not advisable can’t you communicate your concern without invading her space and holding on to her shirt like she stole something. ”
@MrDclean: “No wonder FG no get respect for them”
@DanielBenedictt: “The girl even get time to explain, if anybody hold me like this when no be say I tiff, I pity that person.”
@slim_eno: “How’s skating against the law?”
@atiliolaore: “Prof Woods too get wahala.”
@sanwo_anne: “Well maybe he is right. but the girl may not even know it’s against the law. He could have just calmly explained to her. but as usual agídí Prof Wood don dey since tipetipe. Shey na Chemistry he even teach me then sef. Very hard man.. He for use the same energy go fight corruption.”
