Shoprite workers in Akure and Ikeja are currently up in arms with the management of the company over what they call inhuman treatment.
At Akure, Ondo State, business was disrupted at the giant retail store on Tuesday morning as workers massed in front of the mall as early as 8 am, chanting slogans and accusing the management of the company of treating them like slaves.
They carried placards with various inscriptions, such as ‘Say no to modern slavery’, ‘They want to abandon us and run’, ’10 years of service without entitlements, and they want to run, ‘ among others.
The same situation is playing out at the Ikeja outlet as the workers similarly massed at the entrance singing solidarity songs.
Many placards carried complaint of unpaid gratuity.
Efforts to get official reaction from Shoprite was yet to materialise at the time of filing this report.
