A prominent Ondo real estate businessman and owner of Esther Estate, Akinbolusere Kayode—popularly known as Tolufe—has died in a suspected suicide after recording a video bequeathing his entire estate to his wife and children.
The incident occurred at his residence in Ondo City on Thursday, October 29, 2026, where he reportedly ingested a poisonous substance.
He was rushed to the Ondo General Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
Emotional farewell video bequeaths estate to family
In the self-recorded video that circulated across social media platforms, Kayode addressed his family, business struggles, and property distribution, insisting that his declarations were made voluntarily without duress or external pressure.
“I am doing this video on behalf of my family. I, Akinbolusere Kayode, am doing my will on my properties. I am doing this on my own; nobody put pressure on me,” he stated.
Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Kayode recalled starting his business from scratch as a barber and acknowledged his wife, Akinbolusere Esther Adenike, for standing by him through difficult seasons.
He formally willed all his properties to his wife and their three children currently residing in Canada.
Business setbacks and public speculation
Kayode also discussed recent operational setbacks with his business enterprise, revealing that several newly acquired factory machines had developed severe faults on the day they were put into operation. He expressed deep regret, admitting responsibility for personal missteps that affected his affairs.
The video triggered widespread speculation on social media, with observers and commentators pointing to his facial physical marks and vocal tone to allege that the recording may have been made under threat or coercion.
Spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the businessman’s demise.
Law enforcement authorities have commenced preliminary investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.
Netizens react
The tragedy has sparked intense debate online, with netizens offering varying interpretations ranging from economic frustration and mental health breakdown to marital strain and the psychological toll of family separation.
Economic frustration and depression: Several users attributed the tragedy to severe financial pressure and mental health struggles.
Commenting on the incident, Growth Mindset (@brightoibe) wrote, “This is unfortunate. I suspect depression. Dear Men try to build a social support system around yourself.” Similarly, Preach Ojukwu (@TrendfusionNG) noted, “The economy is tipping many into severe depression.”
The ‘Japa’ syndrome and loneliness: Others pointed to the emotional toll of having immediate family members relocate abroad.
Ebikapade Amasuomo (@EbiXkapade) observed, “Japa is destroying families; how do you have 3 children and they are all in Canada. We need each other; we need company and companion.”
Mayor of Ilorin (@IlorinCityBoy) echoed a similar sentiment, adding, “Why he no move to Canada? God have blessed him. The depression won’t have been this much.”
Speculation on domestic and marital issues: Some commentators suggested underlying marital conflicts or personal secrets influenced his actions.
Nurudeen Olawale (@Wali_Moli) argued, “From his narrative, he was a man who flipsided and didn’t see any reason to remain alive.
Praising his wife’s loyalty suggests that he betrayed her trust.” Another user, phemz (@fizzbizzie), added, “Whatever it is has to do with their marital battles than anything else… when that home is no longer in existence, then the breakdown could be.”
Mysterious circumstances: Safety Cabal (@gabriel_bolatit) called for greater mental health awareness while highlighting the perplexing nature of the case: “This is very mysterious. From what he shared he is not poor… mental health awareness is necessary for everyone, as we do experience breakdowns.”
