A heavy wave of public criticism has trailed the actions of community leaders in Nenwe, Enugu State, following the controversial banishment of a father and his young daughter over an alleged incestuous pregnancy.

The incident came to light after videos circulated widely across social media platforms, showing the father and his daughter being paraded through the community with palm fronds tied around them before being forced out of the town.

According to local reports, the community invoked traditional punitive measures after discovering that the man had allegedly engaged in an intimate relationship with his biological daughter, resulting in a pregnancy.

Social media backlash questions punishment of the minor

While traditional authorities treated the incident as a severe cultural abomination (“Alu”), the public display and joint banishment have drawn sharp condemnation from online commentators and human rights advocates.

Many social media users expressed deep concern over the decision to punish the young girl alongside her father, arguing that she is a vulnerable minor who should be treated as a victim of severe abuse rather than a willing participant:

Calls for protection: Critics emphasised that an underage child lacks the legal and psychological capacity to consent, making the joint banishment unfair and traumatising.

Netizens called on state child-protection agencies and security forces to intervene, rescue the young girl, and ensure proper medical and psychological support.

Traditional sanctions versus legal framework

The incident has reignited broader national conversations regarding the limits of traditional community justice systems when dealing with criminal offences such as incest, statutory rape, and child abuse.

While community banishment is historically invoked in parts of Igboland to cleanse communities of grave abominations, legal experts note that such actions often bypass formal criminal prosecution and leave vulnerable victims without state protection or rehabilitation.

As public pressure mounts, concerned citizens and advocacy groups are urging the Enugu State Government and the relevant law enforcement agencies to launch a formal investigation into the matter, arrest the perpetrator, and rescue the minor from further harm.
