“My friends deserted me” — Comedian Julius Agwu weeps as he recalls health crisis

Popular Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu broke down in tears during a recent interview as he recounted his battle with a brain tumour, his health crisis, and the painful abandonment he experienced from close friends and associates.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Beer Parlour Talk Show titled “Julius Agwu — Back From The Brink,” the veteran entertainer reflected on his pioneering contributions to the Nigerian comedy industry before becoming overcome with emotion.
The pioneer of Nigerian music-comedy
Reflecting on his creative footprint, Agwu emphasised his role in shaping modern Nigerian entertainment, specifically highlighting how he originated the blend of music and stand-up comedy.
“Na me stay, I stayed and form that coinage,” Agwu said while reflecting on his career. “That music-comedy, yes na me form am to tell you how my brain dey think.”
During the session, the comedian became visibly overwhelmed, removing his glasses to wipe away tears while repeatedly apologising to the hosts.
He expressed gratitude to the few individuals who stood by him throughout his long recovery process.
Betrayal and abandonment by close associates
Agwu candidly opened up about the emotional toll of his health struggles, disclosing that many people he considered close friends distanced themselves when his medical emergency began.
He specifically referenced a manager who he claimed handled his financial affairs before cutting ties with him.
“My friends deserted me,” Agwu revealed. “This bishop wey they talk now, he was managing me. Collect my money, do everything, then they stop talking to me, many of them. But God no go leave you.”
Reassurance from industry peers
Following his emotional breakdown, the show hosts offered words of encouragement, reminding the veteran comedian of his indelible mark on African comedy.
They assured him that his contributions and legacy in the Nigerian entertainment industry remain secure, regardless of whether he continues to perform on stage.
