Lagos State cyclist Agbo Francis successfully defended his crown at the fifth edition of Cycling Lagos, winning gold in the professional male category for the second consecutive year.
The flagship 80.31-kilometre race flag-off took place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the National Stadium, Surulere, with competitors navigating a high-speed route along the newly developed Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road before returning to the finish line.
Agbo dominates 80km elite road course
Having secured second place in 2024 and his first championship victory in 2025, Agbo maintained his dominant run in the regional circuit by crossing the finish line ahead of a competitive field.
Fellow Lagos State team members Daniel Sunday and Faruq Animasaun earned the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
The professional female race was suspended for this edition due to insufficient online registrant numbers prior to race day.
Grassroots and youth categories highlight future talent
The tournament also featured competitive junior races designed to develop grassroots cycling talent across southwestern Nigeria.
Under-15 Male Category: Adesoga Temitope of Oyo State won gold, Azeez Mohammed (Oyo State) secured silver, and Popoola Emmanuel (Lagos State) took bronze.
Under-15 Female Category: Oyo State swept the podium, with Azeez Hazanat defending her 2025 title to claim gold, followed by teammates Aminu Olamide (silver) and Azeez Aminu (bronze).
Under-10 Male Category: Abubakar Miyeed of Lagos State took gold, while Amao Malik (Ogun State) and Adesoga Oluwatoku (Oyo State) won silver and bronze.
Under-10 Female Category: Zainab Olarewaju of Lagos State claimed gold, with Adeleke Shindara and Farida Abasi, both representing Oyo State, finishing second and third.
Government support and sustainability focus
Flagging off the symbolic 3.6-kilometre executive ride prior to the main race, the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, Adebanji Adeoye Atewogboye, reiterated the state’s commitment to expanding sports infrastructure under the administration’s THEMES+ Agenda.
Convener of Cycling Lagos and CEO of Cycling Africa Limited, Bamidele Adeleye, commended corporate partners—including lead sponsors Union Bank of Nigeria Plc and Aquafina—for supporting the tourney’s growth into a premier sports tourism and healthy living platform.
The event concluded following a sustainability webinar focused on expanding recycling capacity and strengthening circular economy models across urban centres.
