“The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to shield them from struggle,” Patience Ozokwor warns parents
Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has cautioned parents—particularly those from affluent backgrounds—against over-pampering their children and sheltering them from real-world challenges.
Speaking in an interview on FEMI BABS TV, the seasoned screen icon warned that trying to spare children from every form of hardship can inadvertently stifle their resilience, personal growth, and ability to value hard work.
Over-protection hinders emotional and practical resilience
Ozokwor clarified that while parents naturally wish to provide a better life for their offspring, removing every obstacle prevents them from developing the grit needed to navigate adulthood.
“The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to say you don’t want them to suffer the way you did,” Ozokwor stated during the broadcast. “I’m not saying allow them to suffer. What I’m saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process.”
She further noted that children raised with absolute privilege often fail to grasp the labour and sacrifices behind their family’s success, leading to entitlement or a lack of direction.
“When they don’t struggle, can you imagine you have, like, 20 houses? You have in Enugu, you have in Abuja, you have in Lagos. Your children will just be struggling, ‘Which one belongs to me?’ They don’t know how you struggled to get those things,” she added.
