A video clip of the Senator representing Oyo South and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Sharafadeen Alli, sitting closely with a young man while stroking the youngman’s leg has triggered online debate.
The short recording, which gained swift traction on platforms including X (formerly Twitter), showed an unconventional physical interaction between the lawmaker and an individual during what was initially widely characterised online as an interview session.
The clip shows the youngman sitting on a leg of the politician, who uses his right hand to stroke the right leg of the individual as he addresses the gathering.
The individual who appears to be sitting on the leg of the senator holds out his phone in a manner reporters hold out their phones when interviewing their subjects.
Many commentators and at least one news website speculated that the youngman being lapped by the senator is a journalist. This has been debunked by a commenter who hinted that he was at the event where the video was recorded.
Social media users express mixed reactions
The footage generated widespread discussion, drawing varying interpretations, public critique, and political commentary.
Several social media users questioned the decorum of the encounter, while others linked the video to ongoing political rivalry within the state.
Commentators offered contrasting views, ranging from scepticism regarding the visual framing of the video to speculation about political manoeuvring ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
Defence clarifies setting and identity of individual
Amid the growing online debate, a defence surrounding the context of the event emerged on social media via commentator Tobi Ayelaagbe (TOBI of WAOW-X).
Addressing the viral clip, Ayelaagbe countered the online narrative, stating that the interaction occurred in a heavily constrained physical space and involved a student rather than a journalist.
“Not every awkward-looking frame tells an awkward story,” Ayelaagbe posted. “Yesterday’s interaction took place in a room that was too small for the students. They had asked for an audience, and Senator Sharafadeen Alli stayed to listen, too small a room… he’s even a student not journalist.”
Political landscape and ongoing commentary
The footage surfaced during a heightened political period in Oyo State following Senator Alli’s public declaration to seek the APC governorship nomination.
The internal race for the nomination has been accompanied by public interest and political friction among various party factions.
While supporters and independent commentators continue to push back against the initial narrative by citing space constraints during the student meeting, an official formal press release directly from Senator Alli’s central media office addressing the video has yet to be issued.
