Five Slovakian nationals have been charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of a newborn baby girl in the Wincobank area of Sheffield.
Emergency responders were called to a property on Holywell Heights shortly before 6:00 AM on Sunday, August 30, following reports concerning the infant’s welfare.
Despite efforts by paramedics and officers at the scene, the baby girl was pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that the newborn died from multiple stab wounds. Court proceedings later revealed the infant had sustained 33 wounds across 15 separate stabbings.
Details of the charges
Following an extensive investigation by South Yorkshire Police, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) approved charges against five individuals:
Andrea Skopova (20), Peter Horvath Jr. (19), Peter Horvath Sr. (38), and Nina Horvathova (37) have each been charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice by attempting to conceal the killing.
A 15-year-old girl, whose identity is protected under legal restrictions due to her age, has been charged with perverting the course of justice.
The defendants were remanded in custody following their initial appearance at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court. Two other women, aged 26 and 37, who were previously arrested during the investigation, remain on police bail.

Speaking on the legal proceedings, Lauren Costello, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, confirmed the charging decisions and emphasised the necessity of strict reporting compliance to protect the judicial process:
“Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings… We remind all concerned that proceedings against the defendants are active and they have the right to a fair trial. It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward of South Yorkshire Police reflected on the emotional weight of the case for both responders and the surrounding community:
