A Nigerian lady has taken to social media to cry out after allegedly being rendered homeless following an abrupt demolition exercise carried out by urban development authorities in Abuja.
In a viral video shared on X, the affected resident expressed anger over the rapid execution of the exercise, claiming that officials failed to honour their original notice period before bulldozing residential structures for a road expansion project.
Shortened notice leaves occupants with limited options
According to the victim, enforcement officers had initially issued a 21-day notice to vacate the premises.
However, demolition crews arrived less than five days later, giving residents an ultimatum of just 15 minutes to clear out their personal belongings before heavy machinery moved in.
“You came here, you gave a 21-day notice for people to pack up, and in less than five days, you are standing outside and screaming that they have 15 minutes to leave the building, if not you’re going to hit the wall,” she recounted.
She further alleged that officials began bringing down parts of the structure while some occupants were still inside, preventing many families from salvaging essential property and household items.
Calls for structured resettlement and housing support
Highlighting the severe housing deficits and high rental costs across the Federal Capital Territory, the displaced resident questioned the rationale behind expanding a low-traffic road without providing alternative shelter or adequate transition periods for affected citizens.
She noted that securing affordable housing in Abuja typically takes several months, adding that the sudden enforcement has left her and several others without shelter or immediate resources.
“How do you make people homeless? Are you not just making things worse for everybody? And I’m literally back to square one; I’m literally homeless,” she stated.
The incident has reignited ongoing public debates across social media regarding urban renewal enforcement methods, statutory notice periods, and the socio-economic impact of property demolitions on Abuja residents.
