A wave of public outrage has erupted across social media following highly disturbing comments made by several men under a report detailing the arrest of a 49-year-old man for the alleged repeated defilement of his wife’s teenage niece in Imo State.
The incident, which occurred in the Egbu community within the Owerri North Local Government Area, was brought to light by Owerri-based journalist Chidiebube Okeoma.
According to community sources, the suspect was caught red-handed by vigilant local youths who intercepted the ongoing abuse of the teenager, who resides with the couple.
Following his apprehension, the victim disclosed that the suspect had assaulted her on five separate occasions.
Shockingly, she revealed that the suspect’s wife and daughter were fully aware of the ongoing abuse but had chosen to merely caution the man rather than report him to law enforcement or protect her.
Backlash over online comments
The journalist noted that the disturbing arrest occurred just two days after advocacy groups held an extensive awareness walk against child abuse and gender-based violence within the state capital.
However, the gravity of the crime was quickly overshadowed on social media platforms by a series of highly insensitive and vile comments posted by several male users in the news feed.
The comments, which appeared to trivialise the sexual assault or blame the victim, have sparked massive condemnation from human rights activists, women’s groups, and digital citizens.
One man said the child had a good shape and was seconded by another like-minded man.
Another one asked why the teenager did not cry out the first time, concluding that she must have liked the abuse.
Yet another male commenter asked if she was forced, arguing that there was no issue if she was not forced.
Many commentators have urged women to take note of the profiles making such statements, describing them as a danger to society.
Demands for Justice
Local youth leaders who carried out the initial arrest handed the suspect over to security operatives, demanding a thorough prosecution of both the perpetrator and any family members who actively concealed the felony.
Civil society organisations in Imo State have also vowed to monitor the case closely, emphasising that the toxic online reactions highlight a deeper cultural issue regarding the normalisation of sexual violence against minors.
The Imo State Police Command is expected to arraign the suspect in court as soon as preliminary investigations are concluded.
