Tragedy in India as teen pulls parents along while falling from cliff after dispute over phone

A heartbreaking incident in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, India, has resulted in the deaths of an entire family after a 19-year-old man and both of his parents fell from a cliff on Khawadya Hill.

The tragedy occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, around 10:00 a.m. local time, following a heated domestic disagreement regarding payment for a newly purchased mobile phone.

Distress on Khawadya Hill

The teenager, identified as Kunal Chandgude, walked up the dangerous terrain of Khawadya Hill while threatening to jump from the edge. 

Distraught by his actions, his father, 48-year-old Murlidhar Chandgude, and his mother, Sangita, rushed after him to persuade him to move away from the ledge.

Footage captured at the scene shows a crowd of onlookers standing at a distance, frantically calling out to the young man and pleading with him to step back to safety. 

His mother attempted to slowly approach him, but he warned her to stay back as loved ones continued their attempts to de-escalate the situation.

A fatal chain of events

The encounter ended in catastrophe when the father attempted to reach out and pull his son back to safe ground. 

As he grabbed hold, the teenager pulled backward toward the drop, causing both father and son to lose balance and fall over the edge of the cliff.

Overcome by the immediate loss of her husband and son, the mother threw herself off the ledge moments later.

Locals and authorities revealed that the family had previously suffered severe emotional hardship after losing their eldest son to an illness six years earlier. 

Local law enforcement officials arrived at the scene shortly after to retrieve the bodies and initiate standard investigative procedures.
