An officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), identified as Joseph Ali, has tragically passed away following an accidental discharge at his residence in Abuja.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. in the Compensation Layout area of Old Kutunku, Gwagwalada, Abuja, while the officer was preparing for work.

Rifle discharges during preparation for duty

According to local reports, Ali had dressed in his official uniform and was getting ready to report for his daily duty when the incident occurred.

Before leaving the house, he attempted to retrieve a locally fabricated rifle—which he reportedly used for community night-watch security—to conceal it safely inside his residence.

Unaware that the firearm was cocked and loaded, the weapon accidentally discharged as he picked it up. The pellets reportedly struck him directly in the left eye, in the presence of his wife and children.

Confirmed dead at hospital

Following a distress call from the area, Ali was immediately rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) in Gwagwalada for urgent medical attention.

However, the attending medical officer on duty examined the officer and confirmed that he had succumbed to his injuries before arrival.

His remains have been deposited at the UATH mortuary pending an autopsy, while local authorities monitor the incident.
