
A woman undergoing medical treatment in Lokoja, Kogi State, after being set on fire by her husband during a domestic dispute, has publicly appealed for his forgiveness following his arrest.
The victim, identified as Mrs. Berida Irawo, was reportedly attacked by her husband, Jacob Irawo, on Friday, August 14, 2026, at their residence in Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.
Dispute over household items leads to attack
Preliminary reports indicate that the altercation began after Berida disposed of several items of her husband’s clothing without his consent, believing he no longer wore them.
The action reportedly angered Jacob, who subsequently retrieved petrol from his motorcycle, doused his wife with the fuel, and ignited it.
Victim stable as clergy raises concerns over suspect’s mental state
A updates provided by Pastor John Esiga Abu following a visit to the victim on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, confirmed that Berida is currently in stable condition and recovering from her injuries. Medical personnel expect her to be discharged in the coming days.
During the visit, Berida expressed a desire for her husband to be forgiven, despite the severe nature of the assault.
Commenting on the suspect’s condition, Pastor Abu noted that Jacob’s statements and demeanor immediately following the incident were erratic and incoherent, prompting calls for a formal psychiatric evaluation to assess his mental state while police investigations continue.
