The National Human Rights Commission has called on security agencies to arrest and prosecute Senator Francis Fadahunsi over inflammatory statements allegedly made ahead of the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election.
The rights watchdog also urged the leadership of the Senate to immediately suspend the lawmaker, who represents Osun East, pending the outcome of a full investigation into a viral video clip in which he allegedly incited violence against political opponents.
In a statement signed by the NHRC Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu (SAN), the commission alleged that Fadahunsi explicitly directed his supporters to attack members of the Accord Party and prevent them from exercising their franchise, regardless of whether they possessed valid voter cards.
Condemning the remarks, Ojukwu characterized the senator’s statements as a dangerous escalation that could spark widespread electoral conflict if left unaddressed by law enforcement.
“This is not politics; this is a licence to kill,” Ojukwu warned, emphasizing that any public official advocating violence against citizens based on political affiliation should be removed from office without delay.
Security agencies urged to act
To prevent a breakdown of law and order in Osun State, the commission urged the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services to immediately take the lawmaker into custody for thorough investigation and prosecution.
The NHRC also called on political party chairmen across the state to rein in their supporters, cautioning that hate speech, voter intimidation, and reckless commentary will not be tolerated. The commission advised party leaderships to report any member advocating violence to security authorities.
Meanwhile, the rights agency assured voters in Osun State that a specialised situation room has been activated to monitor, document, and report human rights abuses and electoral infractions throughout the voting process.
Residents were urged to remain calm and report any threats to designated safety channels.
