Disaster was averted in the early hours of Thursday, July 23, after a gas-laden tanker caught fire along Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred at Ola Farm Bus Stop, was contained by emergency responders without any loss of life or injuries recorded.
According to a statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olawale Afolabi, emergency teams arrived to find the tanker engulfed in flames.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the tanker driver lost control after hitting a road bump at high speed.
“Initial findings indicate that the vehicle was travelling at speed when it struck a road bump,” Afolabi stated. “The impact caused the driver to lose control, which led to a tyre burst and an immediate fire outbreak.”
LASEMA officials worked in coordination with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby residential properties and commercial establishments.
Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police Force (Ikotun Division) managed traffic flow and crowd control throughout the rescue operation.
“We are grateful to report that there was no loss of life, and no casualties were recorded. The situation has been brought under control, and the fire fully extinguished,” Afolabi added.
Heavy-duty equipment was subsequently deployed to evacuate the burnt tanker from the corridor and restore normal traffic movement along Abaranje Road.
Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, advised motorists to observe speed limits, particularly around residential areas and designated speed bumps, while reiterating the agency’s commitment to rapid emergency response across the state.
