ICPC investigators have interrogated Adeniyi Adeyemi inside police detention over the fake PFIPC scandal as the House of Representatives prepares to question top cabinet members.
The investigation into the fictitious Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) intensified on Wednesday, July 22, as operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) commenced interrogating its alleged ringleader, Adeniyi Adeyemi, in police custody.
Adeyemi, who falsely presented himself as the Director-General of the unapproved presidential body, was questioned at the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja following an initial delay to allow his legal representation to arrive.
The interrogation comes as President Bola Tinubu ordered a comprehensive 30-day anti-graft probe into allegations involving forged appointment letters, unauthorised bank accounts, and the fraudulent inclusion of the fake council in the 2026 national budget.
Gbajabiamila appears before ICPC
The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, voluntarily appeared at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, July 20, to provide testimony and clarify his position.
In a statement issued by his legal counsel, Jiti Ogunye, the Chief of Staff refuted claims made by Adeyemi that appointment letters were issued or financial transactions took place regarding the council, maintaining that he responded to all inquiries before returning to his official duties. Gbajabiamila has since instituted a ₦15 billion defamation lawsuit against Adeyemi.
House panel grills top cabinet members today
Concurrently, the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating the scam, chaired by Representative Yusuf Gagdi, is set to question several high-ranking government officials today.
Those expected to appear before the panel include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN); Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu; Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele; and Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi.
The committee is seeking explanations on how the non-existent council secured office space within Phase III of the Federal Secretariat complex, obtained recruitment waivers for over 300 personnel, and appeared in budget proposals despite earlier warnings from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
