Police arrest Delta content creator over alleged rape as victim commits suicide

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 44-year-old content creator, popularly known as Odogwu Asaba, over allegations that he raped a 21-year-old woman who later died by suicide.
The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, who said the suspect is currently in police custody while investigations continue.
According to information available, the young woman, identified as Favour, showed interest in a social media monetisation masterclass advertised by the suspect and was allegedly persuaded to travel to Asaba from Warri by the suspect after he reportedly promised to assist her with monetising her TikTok page.
It is alleged that she was lured into a hotel room where the suspect sexually assaulted her.
According to the information provided by human rights activists, Israel Joe, Favour contacted the Odogwu Asaba when she got back home to complain that she was still bleeding from the assault he committed on her.
The activist said the deceased was a virgin and was in severe pain following the assault. He said the suspect subsequently sent the victim N10,000 and warned her not to contact him again.
She reportedly confided in her twin sister and her mother, and they tried to get justice for her to no avail.
Favour reportedly took the matter to a human rights activist who took her statement and later advised her to drop the matter because the suspect was popular and influential.
Unable to get redress, Favour reportedly fell into depression. She recorded a video of what transpired and allegedly drank a poisonous substance in her apartment. This led to widespread public concern and calls for justice.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday at his residence in Asaba following a petition reportedly submitted by Warri-based human rights activist, Israel Joe.
Police have not released full details of the investigation but confirmed that the suspect is in custody. Reports also indicate that he allegedly made a confessional statement, although the police have yet to provide further information on the claim.
Reacting to the development, Israel Joe commended the Delta State Police Command for acting on the petition and urged investigators to ensure that justice is served.
The police have not announced when the suspect will be formally charged in court.
