The Olawuyi family has been thrown into mourning following the peaceful passing of Mrs Abimbola Olawuyi, the widow of the late iconic investigative broadcaster and media pioneer, Kolawole Olawuyi.
Mrs Olawuyi reportedly closed her eyes for the final time on Monday morning, July 6, 2026, following a brief and sudden illness.
A close family source who confirmed the devastating news described her transition as a profound loss, noting that she was the rock that held the family’s legacy intact for nearly two decades following her husband’s untimely demise.
Retiring from the spotlight since Kolawole Olawuyi died
Her passing comes exactly 19 years after the death of her husband, Kola Olawuyi, who revolutionised independent production in broadcasting in Nigeria.
Through his gripping, mystery-unravelling radio and television programs like ‘Iriri Aye’ and ‘Nnkan Nbe’, the late media giant became a household name across the Southwest, fearlessly exposing secret cults, ritual rings, institutional fraud, and deep-seated social vices.
Following his shocking death in 2007, Abimbola chose a life of quiet dignity away from the cameras and media frenzy. Rather than capitalising on her husband’s massive public profile, she dedicated her entire life to:
Protecting the integrity of the Olawuyi name.
Providing a stable, quiet environment to single-handedly raise their four children.
Preserving the rich broadcasting archives left behind by her late husband.
Tributes pour in for a resilient matriarch
Close friends and associates have flooded the family with condolences, praising the late matriarch’s unwavering resilience and grace under pressure.
Returning to life as a young widow after the loss of a public figure of Kola’s stature came with immense social and financial challenges, yet those close to her noted that she never wavered in her maternal duties.
She was a pastor at RCCG Grace City at the time of her death. Her husband died at the age of 44 in 2007.
The family has expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love from old fans of ‘Nnkan Nbe’ and members of the media community.
They have requested privacy during this difficult period of grief and stated that the formal burial arrangements for Abimbola Olawuyi will be made public in due course.
