A disturbing video circulating on social media has triggered widespread public condemnation after capturing the moment a vehicle allegedly driven by a policeman ran over a man lying across a roadway.
The incident allegedly stemmed from an enforcement standoff, during which a car owner attempted to block an enforcement team from impounding his vehicle by placing his body directly in front of it.
Despite frantic appeals and visible protests from bystanders, the vehicle accelerated forward, rolling over the man before leaving the scene.
Standoff over vehicle impoundment escalates
No useful information was attached to the video by the original poster, besides the allegation that it was a police team.
However, there was speculation in the comments section that the confrontation began when an enforcement team attempted to seize a citizen’s vehicle.
In a desperate bid to protect his property and halt the process, the vehicle owner lay flat on the asphalt, creating a human barrier.
Rather than de-escalating the high-stakes confrontation to ensure public safety, the driver pressed forward. Eyewitnesses and good samaritans can be heard screaming frantically in the video, pleading for the vehicle to stop.
The driver proceeded regardless, leaving onlookers in shock. The current medical status of the victim has not been verified.
Police call for public assistance to track incident data
Many of the commenters tagged the Inspector General of Police and other top officers of the Nigerian Police Force.
As digital outrage intensifies, law enforcement authorities confirmed they have reviewed the graphic footage.
Acknowledging the severe nature of the allegations, police officials have launched a formal investigation.
However, because the viral video has been stripped of its original metadata, investigators lack critical context regarding where and when the event took place.
To take immediate disciplinary and legal action, the police complaint unit has issued an urgent appeal for verifiable information, specifically requesting:
Original video files: Unedited footage containing embedded time stamps and geographic coordinates.
Witness statements: Direct testimonies from individuals who were present during the confrontation or who can identify the parties involved.
Anonymity assurance: Authorities have emphasised that all tips will be handled with strict confidentiality to protect contributors.
Civil rights advocates note that under established protocols, enforcement teams are legally bound by a strict duty of care. Operational guidelines dictate that human life must always be prioritised over property interests or civil asset seizures, making the actions displayed in the video a subject of severe scrutiny.
Members of the public with verifiable details or original recordings are urged to contact the nearest public relations desk or submit data through the official police reporting portal.
