Bandits demand fresh N300m ransom for abducted electoral commissioner

The abducted Permanent Commissioner of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), Barrister Ahmed Mohammed, remains in captivity nine months after his family paid an initial N40 million ransom.
His captors are now demanding an additional N300 million to secure his release.
Barrister Ahmed was intercepted and kidnapped by armed bandits on September 29, 2025, along the Mokwa–Ibbi Road in the Borgu Local Government Area.
The official was travelling to Minna on a state assignment when the incident occurred, notably just four weeks before the state’s local government elections on November 1, 2025.
Family appeals to Niger State government for intervention
Speaking anonymously to Daily Trust, a member of the victim’s family disclosed that the kidnappers re-established contact on Monday, June 29, 2026, to pressure the family over the new financial demand.
The source noted that the bandits have been calling almost daily, with Tuesday being the only recent exception. Having exhausted all their savings and resources to raise the initial N40 million, the family stated they are completely unable to meet the fresh N300 million demand.
They are urgently appealing to the Niger State Government for assistance, emphasising that the commissioner was abducted while actively serving the state.
Growing concerns over deteriorating health
Ayuba Abubakar, a close friend of the commissioner, confirmed that loved ones have done everything humanly possible to secure his freedom over the last nine months.
Abubakar expressed grave concerns about the commissioner’s well-being, stating that reports indicate that Barrister Ahmed’s health is deteriorating rapidly.
On behalf of the family, colleagues, and well-wishers, he called for immediate intervention from the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to bring the official home safely.
