The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast predicting a combination of sunshine, heavy downpours, and severe thunderstorms across multiple states from Monday to Wednesday.
The weather outlook, released by the agency in Abuja, indicates varied atmospheric conditions across northern, central, and southern regions, prompting safety warnings for residents, motorists, and aviation stakeholders.
Regional weather breakdown
Northern Region: Predominantly sunny weather is anticipated across the north, with partial cloud cover. Taraba State is expected to experience localised thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours.
North-Central Region: Conditions will remain mostly cloudy with sunny intervals throughout the three-day period.
Southern Region: Coastal and inland southern states will experience intermittent cloudiness and sunny intervals alongside widespread rainfall.
Initial light thunderstorms across Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are expected to escalate into moderate rainfall affecting Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, and surrounding areas.
Rainfall activity is projected to persist through Tuesday and Wednesday, with heavy downpours expected across Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Enugu, Delta, and Rivers states.
NiMet issues public safety and aviation advisory
In light of the anticipated weather changes, NiMet warned that intense localised thunderstorms may be preceded by high-velocity winds capable of displacing loose structures and felling tree branches.
The agency urged the public to observe precautionary measures:
Avoid driving through heavy rainstorms or flooded stretches.
Disconnect home appliances from power outlets during lightning storms.
Stay clear of tall trees, billboards, and unfortified structures.
Maintain adequate hydration and remain in well-ventilated spaces during high-temperature intervals.
NiMet also advised airline operators to collect updated, airport-specific weather intelligence reports to ensure safe flight planning and operational safety throughout the weather window.
