A Nigerian man living in Europe has sparked intense conversations online after opening up about the severe emotional and mental health toll he has faced since relocating abroad.

The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, shared that the immense pressure, isolation, and fast-paced lifestyle of living overseas had drastically altered both his emotional well-being and his physical appearance.

‘I became an ugly old man’

Reflecting on his journey, the migrant wrote: “I came to Europe as a young handsome man, but loneliness, stress, and frustration turned me into an ugly old man.”

His raw confession quickly went viral on social media, prompting a wave of mixed reactions from Nigerians who debated the harsh, often hidden realities of the “Japa” phenomenon.

The post triggered a wide range of responses, with many netizens offering advice on how to survive the isolation of Western countries, while others viewed it with typical Nigerian humour.

One social media user, Lara, suggested that building a family support system is crucial to surviving abroad. “All you needed was a wife and a stable relationship. Children will come along too. He’s not even lying; it’s incredibly easy to get depressed in those countries,” she wrote.

Another commenter, Sandra, expressed surprise that someone living abroad could face such deep frustration.

“Stress I can understand, but loneliness and frustration? You are frustrated abroad? If you had gotten married and had kids by now, maybe things would be different,” she countered.

However, Yusuf highlighted the critical importance of mental health awareness, noting that life abroad is rarely as easy as it looks from the outside.

“Migration stories can be beautiful, but also deeply challenging. Mental health matters anywhere in the world,” he pointed out.

Injecting some humour into the discourse, a user named Ogechex joked that the financial benefits should outweigh the aesthetic toll, writing:

“But you are seeing the money. If it’s too hard, just come back to Nigeria, let another person replace you and become ugly too.”

The viral post continues to trend as more diaspora Nigerians share their personal struggles with mental health, structural racism, and the culture shock of moving to Europe.
