The management of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has suspended two students over their alleged involvement in cyberbullying and blackmailing the institution’s suspended Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
The sanction was announced in an official statement released on Friday by the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Tajudeen Opoola.
The two affected undergraduates, identified as Alao Iyanuoluwa Odunayo and Olawale Abiodun Samuel, were accused of orchestrating a malicious cyber-campaign against the embattled student leader.
According to the university authorities, the duo allegedly conspired to leak Adio’s private affairs across various online platforms as a retaliatory measure after he failed to satisfy their financial demands.
Sources said the embattled student leader had an intimate session with a female student who recorded their activities without his consent and tried to exchange it for cash.
Expressing strong disapproval of the incident, the university management stated that it would not tolerate any actions that could bring the reputation of the higher institution into disrepute.
While comprehensive investigations into the extortion and cyber-harassment allegations remain ongoing, the university directed both Odunayo and Samuel to vacate the campus on indefinite suspension.
The management reiterated its unwavering commitment to weeding out indiscipline and maintaining strict ethical standards among its student body.
The multi-layered crisis surrounding FUOYE’s ousted sug leader
The cyberbullying scandal marks a turbulent week for the institution’s student union leadership. Just last week, the university suspended the SUG President, James Adio, alongside the Deputy Director of Student Affairs, following a severe extortion scandal.
Adio was implicated in an illegal scheme that forced freshmen to pay an unauthorised ₦1,000 fee for practical sessions.
Investigations reportedly traced a sum of ₦700,000 from the illicit collection directly into the student leader’s personal bank account.
Following his official ouster, an explicit private video allegedly featuring the suspended SUG president began circulating widely on social media platforms, sparking outrage and drawing the attention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), which has since intervened in the ongoing developments.
