Campus declares lecture-free day to mourn
In immediate response to the tragedy, the university administration suspended all lectures on Thursday to honour the deceased student and allow the grieving student populace to mourn.
An official statement signed by the institution’s spokesperson, Mr. Niyi Oduwole, confirmed the directive issued by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, on behalf of the university senate:
“Following the incident of armed robbery in Ago-Iwoye township that resulted in the tragic loss of one of our students early this morning, the Vice-Chancellor… has directed that today, Thursday, 18th June, 2026, be declared a lecture-free day.”
The management urged the student body to maintain order and exercise restraint during this emotional period, warning against any reactive protests or demonstrations that could destabilise the volatile security situation on the ground.
Security measures and police launch manhunt
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ayodeji Agboola offered condolences to Abiodun’s family, reassuring students that university officials are working behind the scenes to scale up security protocols within off-campus student residential areas.
The Ogun State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the homicide.
Confirming the incident, State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that tactical teams were deployed immediately after the distress call went out.
Operatives responded to the scene and have initiated a targeted manhunt to track down and apprehend the fleeing robbery suspects.
