A Nigerian actor, Mofe Duncan, has strongly criticised media personality Daddy Freeze over his comments about the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood star Alex Ekubo.

In a lengthy social media post, the actor accused Daddy Freeze of making the memorial event about himself instead of focusing on celebrating the life and legacy of the deceased actor.

Responding to Freeze’s claim that gospel singer Mercy Chinwo turned the event into a concert, the actor insisted that the gathering was never intended to be a funeral service but rather a night of tributes and worship in honour of Ekubo.

“With all due respect, the night wasn’t about you or anyone else. It was about Alexx,” he wrote.

He argued that Daddy Freeze’s criticism ignored the purpose of the event and failed to acknowledge the wishes and personality of the late actor.

According to him, hymns were rendered during the programme, and several speakers repeatedly emphasised that Ekubo had a deep love for worship during his lifetime.

The actor maintained that a worship-filled atmosphere was fitting because it reflected what the deceased would have wanted.

“It was a night of worship because people close to Alexx repeatedly stated that he loved worship. A worship session was exactly what he would have wanted,” he stated.

The actor also took issue with Freeze’s decision to publicly complain about the event after attending it.

He noted that guests had been asked to wear white as part of the celebration-of-life theme and suggested that Freeze’s appearance in black indicated that he may have misunderstood the nature of the gathering.

While acknowledging that everyone is entitled to personal opinions, he said publicly criticising the programme and revealing that he walked out was unnecessary and disrespectful to the memory of the late actor.

The actor further warned that memorial events should focus on honouring the deceased rather than becoming subjects of controversy.

“May people not walk out on your own night of tributes,” he wrote.

He concluded by insisting that Daddy Freeze had crossed a line with his comments and urged him to recognise that the event was organised to celebrate Ekubo’s life rather than satisfy the expectations of individual attendees.

The exchange has since generated widespread reactions online, with social media users divided over whether Daddy Freeze’s observations were fair criticism or an inappropriate response to a memorial event.

The debate continues to trend across various platforms as Nigerians weigh in on how services of songs and celebration-of-life ceremonies should be conducted.
