Nigerian Navy launches probe into the death of female officer amid claims she died under punishment

The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the death of a female personnel identified as WO Yusuf and has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident following widespread reactions on social media.
The case generated public concern after reports online alleged that the naval officer collapsed and later died after she was allegedly subjected to punishment under the intense sun at a Navy medical facility in Gowon Estate, Ipaja area of Lagos State.
According to claims circulating on X, the incident occurred at the Nigerian Navy sick bay in Alimosho Local Government Area.
The reports alleged that WO Yusuf had been absent from duty on May 19, 2026, due to illness and resumed duty the following day.
It was further alleged that upon returning, she was questioned by her superior officer, identified as Lt. Commander ST Abashim, over her absence.
Despite reportedly explaining that she was unwell and needed medical care, the officer was allegedly ordered to carry out strenuous punishment under harsh weather conditions.
The viral account claimed that WO Yusuf later became weak, dizzy, and experienced blurred vision during the exercise.
The report also alleged that she was locked inside a ward without urgent medical attention and died roughly an hour later.
Reacting to the controversy, the Nigerian Navy denied claims that the deceased officer died as a result of any disciplinary action ordered by a superior officer.
In a statement issued by the Navy’s spokesperson, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the service described the online reports linking the death to punishment as inaccurate and misleading.
“The Nigerian Navy has observed with concern the circulation of false claims regarding the unfortunate death of a female rating allegedly connected to the conduct of a female lieutenant commander,” the statement said.
Folorunsho added that the matter is currently under investigation and assured the public that the incident is being handled professionally and with sensitivity.
He explained that verified details surrounding the officer’s death, including the actual cause, would be communicated to the deceased’s family while respecting medical confidentiality.
