A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of two brothers in Akure, the Ondo State capital, after a truck reportedly rammed into several vehicles and a motorcycle along Reuben Fasoranti Road.
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, around the busy Alagbaka area of the city.
According to reports, the deceased were middle-aged fruit sellers who operated beside Iyeoma Plaza.
Witnesses said the victims were on a motorcycle when the speeding truck crashed into them, killing them instantly.
Sources at the scene alleged that officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) were carrying out a stop-and-check operation on motorists’ licences at the time of the incident, leading to heavy traffic congestion along the road.
A commercial driver who narrowly escaped the crash recounted the terrifying moment while speaking with Hope Newspaper.
“I came to deliver goods to my boss, but the shop was yet to open, so I parked my vehicle. As I was moving towards the boot to bring down the goods in front of the shop, I suddenly heard people shouting,” he said.
“The truck crushed the two men on the motorcycle instantly. I thank God for sparing my life,” the driver added.
Police officers attached to the Ijapo Division later arrived at the scene and evacuated the bodies of the victims to a morgue.
The incident sparked outrage among residents and sympathisers, many of whom reportedly blamed the VIO officers for causing the traffic buildup that may have contributed to the crash.
Tension reportedly rose in the area shortly after the accident, with angry youths allegedly attempting to attack the nearby VIO office.
However, officers of the Nigeria Police Force intervened and restored calm before the situation escalated further.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns over traffic management and enforcement operations on major roads within the state capital.
