A 65-year-old Alabama woman, Sheri Mitchell-Clutts, has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing her husband, 69-year-old Timothy Clutts, inside their rural Russellville home in a case that authorities say followed tension over her post-surgery recovery.
According to Franklin County authorities, the incident occurred on Sunday night, May 10, after deputies responded to a distress call and found Timothy seated in his recliner with a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators allege that Mitchell-Clutts later admitted to the shooting during questioning. She reportedly told officers that her husband had been “annoying her” by repeatedly checking on her after she underwent open-heart surgery two weeks earlier.
Sheriff Shannon Oliver stated that the suspect initially claimed she felt threatened, but further questioning revealed a different account.
Her late husband had been concerned for her well-being following an open heart surgery, and would pop into her room to be sure she was all right.
Mitchell-Clutts, however, thought the man was doing too much.
Authorities say she told investigators she retrieved a firearm in anticipation of her husband returning to her room, but when he did not, she went into the living room where he was seated and shot him.
Officials described the suspect as unusually forthcoming during questioning, noting that she did not attempt to flee and allegedly gave detailed statements about the incident.
Mitchell-Clutts has since been charged with murder and is being held without bond at Franklin County Jail as investigations continue.
The case has shocked the local community, not only because of the fatal outcome but also due to the unusual circumstances described by investigators, including the fact that the couple had reportedly been married for 15 years prior to the incident.
Authorities say they are continuing to review the events leading up to the shooting to better understand the circumstances surrounding the case.
