A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a young Nigerian pilgrim, Sadiya Isma’il Uba, who was en route to perform the 2026 Hajj.

Sadiya, a fresh graduate of Medical Microbiology from Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), reportedly died on Friday, May 9, 2026, while travelling from Yobe State to Damaturu on her way to Muhammadu Buhari Airport in Maiduguri for her flight to Saudi Arabia.

Family sources said she had recently completed her university studies in April 2026 and was preparing for Hajj as part of a new life chapter that also included planned wedding arrangements scheduled for January 2027.

The university confirmed her death in an official statement, describing her as a disciplined and humble student whose passing has left the academic community in shock.

The institution expressed condolences to her family and prayed for her soul to rest in peace.

The President of MAAUN, Prof. Mohammad Israr, also described the incident as a painful loss, noting that the entire university community had been thrown into mourning following the sudden tragedy.

Sadiya has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites in her home state of Yobe.

Her death comes at a time when Nigerian pilgrims are beginning airlifts for the 2026 Hajj exercise, making the incident particularly painful for many who see it as a journey cut short at its most hopeful moment.

The accident has sparked renewed concerns about road safety for long-distance travellers, especially pilgrims moving across northern routes toward major international departure points such as Maiduguri.
