A 49-year-old Canadian actress, Claire Brosseau, has approached the courts to seek permission for assisted death, despite not having any physical illness.

Brosseau, based in Montreal, has built a successful acting career and describes her life as one filled with “an embarrassment of riches,” including strong family ties, friendships, and a beloved pet.

However, she says she continues to endure severe mental health challenges, including bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress, which she describes as deeply overwhelming.

Speaking outside the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on May 4, she said her daily experience is marked by intense emotional distress, making it difficult to cope from one day to the next.

According to reports, Brosseau has undergone extensive treatment over the years, including multiple medications, therapy approaches, and electroconvulsive therapy, but says none have provided lasting relief.

She has been advocating since 2021 for access to Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program, which currently excludes individuals whose sole underlying condition is mental illness.

Her legal team argues that her situation is exceptional and is seeking a constitutional exemption that would allow her access to assisted death under the law.

The case has drawn mixed reactions from those close to her. Members of her family have expressed distress over her decision, with her sister describing it as “giving up,” while her mother acknowledged the difficulty of witnessing prolonged suffering.

Medical opinions on her case are also divided. One of her psychiatrists expressed confidence that recovery is still possible and questioned whether assisted death is the right path.

Another psychiatrist said she hopes Brosseau will reconsider but emphasised her support for the patient’s autonomy.

Brosseau has also stated that, if permitted, she would prefer to spend her final moments privately, while considering organ donation as part of her decision.
