Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, Head of Corporate Communications at Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, has defended the recent increase in parking tariffs at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2), stating that the facility was never intended for prolonged vehicle storage.

Speaking on the development, she explained that the airport car park was originally designed strictly for short-term use—primarily for passenger drop-offs and pick-ups. However, over time, the space has been significantly abused, with some individuals leaving their vehicles parked for extended durations.

Yinka-Olawuyi disclosed that in extreme cases, cars were left in the facility for as long as a year, effectively converting the car park into an informal garage—an outcome that contradicts its operational purpose and limits availability for legitimate users.

According to her, the revised tariff structure is part of a broader demand management strategy aimed at discouraging long-term parking and restoring order to the system. She emphasised that the move is not driven primarily by revenue considerations but by the need to ensure efficient use of the facility.

The clarification comes amid public reactions to the tariff adjustment, with airport authorities maintaining that the changes are necessary to improve access and turnover for passengers using the terminal.
