Babajide Sanwo-Olu has formally endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election, signalling early political alignment within Lagos State.
The endorsement was announced on Monday following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat declared his intention to contest the governorship seat before members of the State Executive Council and key leaders of the All Progressives Congress.
The meeting was attended by influential stakeholders, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council such as Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the decision as unanimous, noting that those present agreed Hamzat possesses the competence and experience required to lead the state.
“We just received Mr Deputy, who came with a strong delegation to formally inform us of his intention to contest. It was unanimous that he is fit and well-prepared for the job,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted Hamzat’s track record over the past seven years, praising his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to governance. He added that their working relationship has demonstrated Hamzat’s readiness for higher responsibility.
“He is a man who has worked with me at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support,” he stated.
The governor also acknowledged the role of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in shaping their political journey, describing him as instrumental in their emergence and leadership development.
Describing Hamzat as “built for the job,” Sanwo-Olu said the deputy governor has long demonstrated the qualities required to govern Lagos effectively.
“This is a deputy governor that is worth a governor from day one. He has been prepared for this responsibility, and we believe he deserves the opportunity,” he added.
The development underscores growing political activity within Lagos as stakeholders begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ruling APC appearing to consolidate internal consensus around a potential candidate.
