The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has urged Nigerians living in South Africa to take precautionary measures as fresh xenophobic attacks spread across parts of the country.

In an advisory, the commission called on Nigerians to shut down their businesses temporarily and avoid any form of confrontation, citing rising anti-foreigner protests.

The warning follows a circular issued by the Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg, which indicated that demonstrations in several areas have turned violent.

According to NiDCOM, cities including East London, Cape Town, Durban, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal have recorded incidents of looting, property destruction, and injuries.

The commission also revealed that intelligence reports point to planned protests in Gauteng Province between April 27 and 29, with demonstrators reportedly seeking stricter action against foreign nationals.

As part of safety measures, NiDCOM advised Nigerians to avoid crowded areas, stay away from protest zones, and monitor local media for updates on the evolving situation.

Business owners were specifically asked to close their shops on April 27, which marks Freedom Day, and consider extending the closure through April 28 and 29, noting that foreign-owned businesses are often targeted during such unrest.

The commission said it is aligning with the position of the Nigerian Consulate-General and confirmed that diplomatic efforts are ongoing. It added that Bianca Ojukwu is engaging South African authorities over the situation.

NiDCOM reassured Nigerians that the mission in Johannesburg remains operational and is working with local law enforcement to ensure their safety.
