A viral video showing a Lagos resident confronting officials who allegedly demanded a permit for solar panel installation has sparked widespread reactions online.
In the footage circulating on social media, the visibly distressed man accused operatives identified as members of the Monitoring and Compliance Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing of halting his installation project.
Speaking in Yoruba, the man questioned the legality of the demand, insisting he had never heard of any regulation requiring a permit before installing solar panels in residential premises.
“Lagos State Government, do you know these people? They are saying we now have to obtain a permit before installing solar panels,” he said, while filming the officials dressed in white and brown uniforms.
The incident comes amid a growing shift by Nigerians toward alternative energy solutions, driven by persistent power outages and rising electricity tariffs. Solar systems and inverters have become increasingly popular among households seeking a stable power supply.
The video has since triggered public outrage, with many Nigerians expressing concern over what they described as possible harassment or unauthorised enforcement. Others called on the Lagos State Government to clarify whether such a policy exists.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to issue an official response to the incident or confirm the identity of the officials involved.
