A football match in Ecuador ended in tragedy after a referee was fatally shot in front of players and spectators.

The victim, identified as 48-year-old Javier Ortega, was officiating a game in the town of Pasaje, located in El Oro province, when the incident occurred on Sunday, April 12.

According to eyewitness accounts, several armed men reportedly approached the referee during the match and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

The shocking development caused panic, with players and fans scrambling for safety as the game was abruptly halted.

Following the incident, the organising club announced the suspension of upcoming matches pending further clarity on the situation. Family members of the deceased have also called for a thorough and swift investigation.

Law enforcement authorities have since launched a probe, treating the killing as a targeted attack. Officers are said to be examining video footage captured on mobile devices and speaking with witnesses to help identify those responsible.

A football official, reacting to the incident, described Ortega as a committed referee and condemned the act, noting that losing a life in such circumstances is deeply troubling.

Police officials have also characterised the killing as a deliberate act of violence carried out in a setting meant for recreation and community engagement.
