A 54-year-old man, Chhatra Thapa, was shot dead by police after he allegedly stabbed his wife and adult daughter to death inside their home in Fairfax County, Virginia, authorities said.

Thapa reportedly carried out the attack in the early hours of Monday, February 23, at the family’s residence. A one-year-old child was also inside the house at the time but was found unharmed.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers responded shortly after 5 a.m. to reports of a domestic violence incident.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis described the scene as extremely violent during a press briefing.

“To describe this scene as bloody would be an understatement,” Davis said, adding that the level of chaos inside the home was severe.

When officers arrived, they found Binda Thapa, 52, and her 33-year-old daughter, Mamta Thapa, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Both victims were transported to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Police said the suspect was allegedly attacking his son-in-law when officers entered the home. Authorities stated that they ordered Thapa to drop the weapon, described as a large curved blade, but he reportedly refused.

Officers then opened fire, fatally wounding him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured son-in-law was rushed to the hospital in a life-threatening condition. Police said he had earlier been outside shovelling snow when he heard a disturbance and went back inside, where he discovered that his wife had been stabbed before calling emergency services.

Investigators said the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.

The one-year-old grandchild present in the home was not injured during the attack.
