President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians for forgiveness if he has wronged anyone, as Muslims commence the holy month of Ramadan.

The President made the remarks on Wednesday, February 18, during the opening of this year’s Tafsir at the State House Mosque in Abuja.

Speaking to worshippers, Tinubu reflected on the significance of the holy month coinciding with the Christian season of Lent, describing the overlap as a powerful reminder of shared spiritual values.

“Ramadan coincides with Lent, reminding us of our common commitment to sacrifice, discipline, prayer, and self-denial,” he said.

Emphasising the core message of the fasting period, the President noted that holy month teaches compassion, generosity, and forgiveness.

“We start this Ramadan with all the teaching that it brings to us all. But the main principle is to do good to people, to share love and faith, and to forgive sins. I say, if I have sinned, forgive me as Nigerians,” he stated.

Tinubu further stressed that fasting should not be limited to abstaining from food and drink but should reflect kindness, patience, good deeds, and love for humanity.

He also called on Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to use the season to pray for national peace and unity. The President urged citizens to support ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges facing the country.

The appeal comes as Muslims across Nigeria join millions worldwide in observing Ramadan, a month devoted to spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and acts of charity.
