The Dangote Refinery has once again adjusted its petrol pricing, unveiling one of the steepest reductions since the year began as competition tightens across Nigeria’s downstream market.
Fresh data from Petroleumpriceng on Friday confirmed that the refinery has lowered its ex-depot petrol price to N699 per litre, down from N828 per litre. The N129 cut represents a 15.58 per cent decrease and marks the refinery’s 20th price review in 2025.
Industry observers note that the move is strategically timed. With the Yuletide season approaching—traditionally a period of heightened demand—Dangote is pushing to expand market share while responding to pressure from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and independent marketers.
In the last three weeks, NNPCL and several major filling stations have also executed multiple price reductions, bringing pump prices in the Federal Capital Territory to between N915 and N937 per litre.
Analysts say Dangote’s aggressive price strategy may reshape fuel purchasing patterns nationwide, particularly in regions where private depots heavily influence pump prices.
The refinery’s proximity to key distribution corridors is also expected to ease logistics costs for marketers who have continued to struggle with high transportation margins.
This latest adjustment extends a trend that began earlier in the year when Dangote intensified efforts to align its pricing with market realities while staying ahead of rival suppliers.
Many marketers, especially those operating large distribution networks, view the reductions as an opportunity to rebuild customer traffic that had dropped in recent months due to price sensitivity.
With end-of-year travel expected to surge and inflation still squeezing household budgets, the new ex-depot price could trigger broader retail adjustments across the country in the coming days.
For now, all eyes remain on how NNPCL and independent marketers will react as Nigeria’s fuel price competition reaches its peak.
