The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has reiterated his determination to stop the alleged killing of Christians in Nigeria.
Trump spoke in an interview with reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, November 2, 2025, suggesting that the United States would step in.
He said he had instructed the Department of Defence to put together a plan of action to enter Nigeria to stop the alleged violence against Christians.
When pointedly asked about the possibility of US boots on the ground in Nigeria, Trump answered with “Could be”.
He explained that they are killing record numbers of Christians in the country, adding that the US would not allow that to continue.
It would be recalled that Trump had on Saturday stated on his Truth Social platform that the US could cut all aid and assistance to Nigeria and possibly take direct military action.
He said America might go into the “now disgraced country” to kill the Islamic Terrorists targeting Christians.
His Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth, responded to his post with:
“Yes, sir. The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria and anywhere must end immediately. The Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded to the statements via his official X handle.
He said the characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect the country’s national reality.
Tinubu such characterisation also failed to take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians.
He said Religious freedom and tolerance have always been a core tenet of the country’s collective identity and shall always remain so.
