The Nigerian army has reportedly set up a panel to investigate about 20 military officers for plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
PremiumTimes reported that the officers were planning a bloody takeover of the government that would have led to the death of some political leaders.
The publication, following up on an earlier publication by Sahara Reporters on the same subject matter, said 20 and not 16 officers were implicated in the coup.
The plotters had allegedly picked a date to strike when their plot was leaked to the authorities.
Among those arrested and detained since September are a brigadier general and a colonel.
The alleged coup plot has been cited as the reason the Federal Government cancelled the National Independence Day celebration this year.
The military has, however, owned up to detaining some of its officers for “indiscipline and breach of service regulations.”
Defence Headquarters’ spokesperson, Tukur Gusau, a brigadier-general, said on October 4 that the detained sixteen officers were disgruntled over their career status.
They are being detained at an undisclosed military installation in Abuja.
