U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested 2,200 migrants in a massive operation on Tuesday, marking the largest single-day immigration sweep in the country’s history, according to NBC News.
The arrests come as part of a renewed crackdown on undocumented immigrants under President Donald Trump’s administration, following heightened pressure from the White House.
Many of the detainees have been placed in ICE’s Alternatives to Detention program, which monitors individuals using ankle bracelets, smartphone applications, and other location-tracking technologies.
ICE has stated that migrants not considered a threat to public safety were released under supervision.
It remains unclear if any Nigerians were among those arrested. Punch Diaspora Tales reached out to a U.S.-based immigration lawyer and members of the Nigerian community for comments, but no responses had been received at the time of reporting.
