The Nigeria Police Force has announced that its officers seen in a viral video collecting cash from Chinese nationals are now in custody, facing appropriate sanctions for their “unprofessional and unethical” conduct.
The video, which has triggered widespread criticism online, prompted swift action from the Force Headquarters.
In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police reiterated their commitment to professionalism and integrity.
“The Nigeria Police Force is aware of a troubling video circulating on social media, which shows some officers receiving money from a Chinese national,” the statement read.
“Such behaviour is strongly condemned and deemed both unethical and unprofessional.”
Adejobi stressed that the officers’ actions are in direct violation of the core values and standards expected within the Force.
“The Nigeria Police Force has zero tolerance for misconduct and any form of unethical behaviour that could erode public confidence,” he stated.
Although specific sanctions were not disclosed, Adejobi assured Nigerians that the disciplinary process is underway and justice would be served.
The Force also issued a warning to individuals and organisations using police personnel for special services such as escorts or private security. It urged them to avoid actions that could compromise the integrity of police officers or tarnish the image of the Force.
“This serves as a reminder to all beneficiaries of police services to refrain from acts that could demean or compromise our officers,” Adejobi cautioned.
The incident comes as part of the Police Force’s broader reform efforts aimed at promoting accountability and restoring public trust.
“We remain steadfast in our resolve to uphold professionalism and discipline, aligning our conduct with international best practices,” Adejobi concluded.
The police emphasised that the ongoing disciplinary process would serve as a strong message to deter similar misconduct in the future.
