Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head, Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force, has been suspended over the indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

In a criminal complaint lodged at the United States District Court in California, FBI had listed Kyari among six suspects indicted in an international fraud conspiracy.

The fraud was said to have been orchestrated by Ramon Abbas, Instagram celebrity, better known as Hushpuppi.

According to FBI, Hushpuppi, who is currently standing trial in the US, had sent some money to Kyari to help track down one of his rivals.

Although Kyari had denied the allegation, the FBI had asked Nigerian authorities to arrest him.

In a statement on Sunday, Ikechukwu Ani, spokesman of the Police Service Commission, said Kyari’s suspension took effect on Saturday.

“Abba Kyari’s suspension took effect from Saturday, July 31st 2021 and would subsist pending the outcome of the investigation in respect of his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the United States.”

“The Commission has also directed the Inspector General of Police to furnish it with information on further development on the matter for necessary further action.

“The Commission’s decision which was conveyed in a letter with reference, PSC/POL/D/153/vol/V/138 to the Inspector General of Police today, Sunday, August 1st, 2021, was signed by Hon. Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court and Honourable Commissioner 1 in the Commission for the Commission’s Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector General of Police who is currently on leave,” the statement read.

The IGP had earlier sent a letter to the commission recommending the suspension of the police officer.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Baba in the letter dated 31st July 2021, noted the recommendation for suspension of the officer is in line with the internal disciplinary processes of the Force.

A statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba reads:

”The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc (+), NPM, fdc has recommended the immediate suspension of DCP Abba Kyari, the Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), from the Service of the Nigeria Police Force, pending the outcome of an ongoing internal investigations touching on him. The IGP, in his letter to the Police Service Commission, dated 31st July, 2021, noted that the recommendation for the suspension of the officer, is in line with the internal disciplinary processes of the Force.

The IGP further noted that the suspension is also expected to create an enabling environment for the NPF Special Investigation Panel to carry out its investigations into the weighty allegations against DCP Abba Kyari without interference. The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer.

The Special Investigation Panel (SIP), comprising four (4) Senior Police Officers, is headed by DIG Joseph Egbunike, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID). The SIP, inter alia, is to undertake a detailed review of all the allegations against DCP Abba Kyari by the US Government as contained in relevant documents that have been availed the NPF by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The SIP is also to obtain detailed representation of DCP Abba Kyari to all the allegations levelled against him, conduct further investigations as it deems fit, and submit recommendations to guide further actions by the Force Leadership on the matter.

Meanwhile, the IGP has reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to the Rule of Law and assured the public of the sanctity of the probe as well as the absolute respect for the rights and privileges of the officer throughout the period of the investigations.”

Usman Kyari, the brother of the supercop currently in the eye of the storm over an international fraud syndicate, Abba Kyari, has deleted all the pictures he posted on his Instagram page.

The page has been wiped clean of posts, following the travails of his elder brother.

Recall that some Nigerians had previously screenshot some of the lavish lifestyle he displayed on his Instagram page and circulated it widely.

Usman had many pictures of himself wearing different outfits and posing in front of expensive cars.

Usman also showcased himself with his brother, Abba and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, among others.

Abba is currently fighting to extricate himself from a fraud syndicate run by Abbas Olorunwa Ramon, better known as Hushpuppi, who is currently in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for fraud.

The FBI indicted Abba for doing the bidding of Hushpuppi on hire, arresting a recalcitrant member of the syndicate and holding him for Hushpuppi in exchange for money.

Abba denied the allegations, claiming that he only linked Abbas with his tailor who sewed him some attires and that he subsequently forwarded the account of the tailor to Abbas for payment.

The IGP has ordered a review of the information released by the FBI and sources suggested that Abba has been told to assemble a legal team and make a formal response to the allegations.

Supercop, Abba Kyari, has deleted a Facebook post suggesting he considered his indictment by the FBI and subsequent investigation by Nigerian police as a “show” that he is “enjoying.”

The police officer has been in the eye of the storm after he was linked to an international fraud syndicate controlled by the internet celebrity, Ramon Abbas, better known as Hushpuppi.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has obtained a court warrant for the arrest of the top police officer, prompting the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to order a probe of the embattled officer.

Kyari has however maintained a façade of being unperturbed by it all. He put out a post on his Facebook page explaining his interactions with Hushpuppi, claiming that he never collected money for helping him to harass a member of Hushpuppi’s syndicate.

A Facebook user on Friday accused Mr. Kyari of arresting and raping Ada Ngozichukwu, a pro-Biafran agitator.

Mr Kyari on Friday reacted, calling it the funniest so far, adding that he was enjoying the show.

He wrote on his Facebook page on Friday night: “Hahahahaha This is the funniest One so far, we are enjoying the Show.”

The post was widely shared by his friends and followers.

Earlier on Thursday, he wrote in response to somebody’s comments on his declaration of innocence, “Hahahahaha indicted where, How? On social media abi. Let’s see the Evidence of the indictment or the Letter from the court looking for us. Many people who admire our clothes were connected to the designer, So this is an offense now? Or to arrest when their (sic) is a Complaint of threat to life is an offense?

“The bad belle people will wait forever to see us arrested or to produce the papers calling for our arrest. We will not be surprise (sic) if a Fake arrest warrant on us will start circulating later today.

“If FBI wants to hear from somebody working with any Government, they will send letter to the Government of that Country. Am sure that letter too can be fabricated and circulated on social media soonest too. Best wishes for the people waiting to see us arrested, Hahahahaha.”

The comments have also been deleted.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has described DCP Abba Kyari as one of the bravest cops in Nigeria. He says he will not believe the allegations laid against him by the United States investigators working on the Hushpuppi fraud case.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Central District of California, Abba Kyari, a high-ranking Nigerian police officer who has received multiple honours, was one of six people indicted over an elaborate scheme to defraud a Qatari businessperson of more than $1 million, masterminded by celebrity fraudster, Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas.

Femi Fani-Kayode, however, says Kyari is a super cop that has risked his life protecting Nigerians from murderers and terrorists, and that he would not condemn him, unless there was strong evidence to the contrary.

Sharing photos of the DCP, FFK wrote on his social media page:

“Nigerians seem to take delight in believing and assuming the worse about their best. That is part of our problem: we love and celebrate the evil but we despise, hate and seek to pull down the righteous and good.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a forensic investigation into reports that the United States of America Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has linked the head of IGP Intelligence Response Team, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, to the alleged international fraudster, Abbas Ramon, popularly known as Hushpuppi.

According to a press statement issued by PDP spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the revelation showing “the head of Nigeria’s intelligence response unit, as a receiver of proceeds of international fraud is worrisome, disturbing and a stain on the integrity of our nation.”

The statement reads: “The PDP asks President Buhari to direct the Inspector General of Police to take in Abba Kyari for questioning and if found culpable, should be handed over to the FBI.”

“It is indeed disquieting that the integrity of our nation has fallen so abysmally low under the corrupt and fraud-patronizing President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, to the extent that the head of its police intelligence unit is being charged in connection with international fraud.

“Our party demands that the APC administration should not sweep this matter under the carpet given the manifest rapport between Kyari and some top APC leaders.

“We urge President Buhari not to ‘ease out’ this case of corruption but should immediately restore the integrity and image of our nation by allowing for a forensic investigation on the suspect.

“Moreover, if this Abba Kyari matter is not well handled, it will be a permanent stain on the reputation of our police, security system and our nation at large.”
