A total of N10 million has been recovered from a team of policemen from Zone 16 in Bayelsa State.

The policemen extorted the money from the family members of a corps member they arrested and detained while he was going to his place of primary assignment.

The victim said the vehicle conveying him and the others was stopped and searched. They also seized their phones and searched them.

According to human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, who exposed the extortion, the policemen did not find anything incriminating and asked the corps member to give them money for fuel.

The corps member allegedly transferred N15,000 to them, which resulted in a debit alert being sent to his phone.

The debit reportedly showed a huge account balance, which the policemen reportedly saw and accused him of doing fraud.

He was then detained and told to call his family members to bail him out. The victim’s family reportedly sent N10m to a POS account before the man was released.

Gwamnishu said when he took up the case, he visited the station where the affected policemen jeered at him and told him nothing would come out of the case.

He said he then booked an appointment to see the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the area through the police public relations officer.

Gwamnishu alleged that the AIG reacted to him angrily and sent him out of his office. He added that this was an evidence that the man was in support of the harassment and extortion of members of the public by his men.

He called on the Inspector General of Police to call him to order.

Gwamnishu counted boundles of naira which he said totalled N10 million recovered from the suspected rogue officers.

Three policemen, who allegedly extorted the sum of N153,000 from a student of the Lagos State University, Hezekiah Oluwaponmile, on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have been arrested.

The cops, attached to the Owode-Egba Police Station, Siun, Ogun State, allegedly stopped the victim who was travelling from Ibadan to Abeokuta on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

Oluwaponmile said the policemen, who claimed to be on stop and search duty, stopped his vehicle, forced him to disembark.

The victim said they asked what he did for a living and he told them he was a student of LASU.

“They told me to unlock my phone, but I refused; they threatened to kill me if I did not cooperate with them. They brought out a shocker, so I obliged.

“They asked me how many bank accounts I had and how much was in each of them. I told them I had two accounts with GTB and Union Bank. So, I opened my phone due to the threat from them and upon going through it, I was asked to pay the sum of N1m, but I told them I did not have up to that amount.

“Later on, they asked me to open my bank app, where they saw a balance of N288,000 and told me that they would collect N250,000 out of it without telling me what I did wrong.

“I begged them that I needed the money for some things, but they insisted on collecting N150,000.

“Then they asked me to give them my Automated Teller Machine card; I denied having one, so they took me to a Paga (Point of Sale) shop, which they have a connection with.

“The Paga man collected a fee of N3,000 after negotiating from N5,000. On a final note, I did a transfer of N153,000.”

The Ogun State Command spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, however disclosed that the policemen have been traced and arrested.

He said they were already being tried.

The post Policemen arrested for extorting LASU student of N153,000 on Lagos Ibadan Exp first appeared on MicroSecondNews.
