The president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, is set to sign an executive order that will make English the official language of the country.

This was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Friday and was anonymously confirmed by a White House official.

This marks the first time the U.S. will have an official language at the federal level.

It would be a break away from the tradition established during the tenure of President Bill Clinton wherein agencies and recipients of federal funding were required to provide extensive language assistance to non-English speakers.

According to a fact sheet the White House shared with ABC News, the new order coming will give the agencies the flexibility to decide how and when to offer services in languages other than English.

The White House admits that there are hundreds of languages spoken across the United States, but insists that English is the most widely used.

The Trump administration also believes that establishing a national language unifies the country and its citizens.

“Establishing English as the official language promotes unity, establishes efficiency in government operations, and creates a pathway for civic engagement,” the White House wrote in the fact sheet provided to ABC News.

No date has been announced for the signing of the executive order.
