Two suspects linked to the murder of Anambra lawmaker, Justice Azuka, have escaped from police custody, the state police command confirmed on Tuesday night.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspects fled while assisting operatives in an ongoing investigation to apprehend a receiver of stolen vehicles linked to their criminal network.

Although authorities successfully arrested the receiver and recovered two stolen vehicles, the suspects managed to escape.

Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, was abducted on December 24, 2024.

His decomposing body was later discovered on February 6 beneath the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha. Nine individuals were initially arrested in connection with the crime.

Following the escape, Anambra Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered an extensive manhunt, deploying intelligence and operational teams to track down the fugitives.

He also directed immediate disciplinary action against the officers responsible for the custody breach.
