Elder statesman, Edwin Clark, passes away at 97

Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a prominent Nigerian nationalist and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has died at the age of 97.

The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family announced his passing on Monday, February 17, 2025.

Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Clark began his educational journey at the African Church School in Effurun Otor in 1938.

He furthered his studies at various institutions in Okrika before attending the Government Teacher Training College in Abraka from 1949 to 1953.

Initially working as a school teacher, Clark later pursued a law degree at Holborn College in London, graduating in 1964.

Clark’s political involvement commenced in the pre-independence era when he was elected as a councillor for Bomadi in 1953.

He was an active member of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) and participated in the West African Students’ Union during his time in London.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he served as the Commissioner of Education and later as Commissioner of Finance for the Mid-Western Region. In 1975, he was appointed Federal Commissioner for Information under General Yakubu Gowon’s administration.

As a staunch advocate for the Niger Delta region, Clark was instrumental in founding PANDEF, an organization dedicated to promoting the interests and development of the Niger Delta people. Throughout his life, he remained a vocal proponent for resource control, environmental justice, and equitable representation for the region. His unwavering commitment to these causes earned him respect across Nigeria.

In 2015, Clark established the Edwin Clark University in his hometown of Kiagbodo, Delta State.

The institution reflects his dedication to education and human capital development in Nigeria. As Chancellor, he emphasized the importance of accessible quality education for national progress.

Chief Edwin Clark’s passing marks the end of an era characterized by steadfast dedication to national unity, regional advocacy, and educational advancement.

His contributions have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

The family has requested privacy during this time of mourning and has indicated that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
