The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, has intercepted and repatriated 114 individuals from northern Nigeria who were found wandering in the state’s forests without clear purpose.
The action was taken to prevent potential security threats and unauthorized forest encroachment.
According to Adetunji Adeleye, the Amotekun Commander, the individuals were apprehended while being transported in two trucks.
They were reportedly destined for various forested regions within Ondo State, including areas such as Ore and Ofosu.
Upon profiling, it was discovered that all but three of the individuals were unaware of their exact destinations, having been dispatched into the forests to await further instructions from their handlers. This lack of clarity regarding their purpose raised significant security concerns.
In response to the situation, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa issued a directive mandating the evacuation of all persons lacking legitimate reasons for residing in the state’s deep forests.
Commander Adeleye emphasized that while freedom of movement is a constitutional right, it must be exercised with a legitimate purpose.
He stated, “Over a hundred young men, without any clear purpose or destination, were intercepted at various points. What would they become if left unchecked? Criminals!”
The interception of these individuals is part of a broader effort by Amotekun to address security challenges in Ondo State.
The presence of unidentified persons in remote forest areas has been linked to various criminal activities, including kidnapping and armed robbery.
By proactively monitoring and controlling access to these regions, the security outfit aims to mitigate potential threats and maintain peace within the state.
The leader of the Hausa community in Ondo State, Bala Umaru, expressed gratitude to the state government for prioritizing the safety of residents while ensuring the safe return of the intercepted individuals to their home states.
This collaborative approach between security agencies and community leaders underscores the importance of unity in addressing security concerns.
