The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has dismissed as “misleading” a viral video claiming that petrol from the Dangote Refinery, sold by MRS Oil, lasts longer than that sold at NNPC fuel stations.

In a statement issued on Saturday, February 15, NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, refuted the claim, describing it as “false, baseless, and unfounded.” He warned that NNPC would take legal action against individuals or groups spreading such misinformation.

The viral video featured a Nigerian man conducting an informal experiment with two small generators, known locally as “I better pass my neighbour,” to compare fuel efficiency. The man alleged that petrol from MRS Oil, sourced from Dangote Refinery, ran 13 minutes longer than NNPC’s fuel and was cheaper.

He claimed to have purchased 1 litre of MRS petrol for N925 in Alapere, Lagos, while NNPC fuel cost N945 per litre in Ojodu Berger, Lagos. After testing both fuels in identical generators, he reported that the one using NNPC fuel stopped at 17 minutes and 51 seconds, whereas the generator running on MRS petrol lasted 30 minutes.

NNPC dismissed these claims, stating that its fuel undergoes rigorous quality control to ensure efficiency, durability, and environmental compliance. Soneye further noted that a significant percentage of PMS sold at NNPC stations in Lagos comes from Dangote Refinery, which meets strict industry standards.

“This misleading video is a desperate attempt by economic saboteurs to tarnish NNPC’s reputation and misinform the public,” the statement read. “We will not tolerate deliberate falsehoods designed to undermine our operations. NNPC Ltd will pursue legal action against those responsible.”
